The Power of Emotional Intelligence in Leadership

Nine years on a British cruise ship. I started as an assistant waiter under a senior who made me cry. I ended as the company’s first butler.

What changed between those two moments was not training. It was a decision made quietly, without ceremony, somewhere in the middle of the Atlantic:

“Regardless of how my guests behave, regardless of what the work returns — they will receive the best of my attention simply because they have me.”

Not because it was required. Because I decided that is who I was.

I have spent thirty years trying to understand what made that decision possible. And what makes it impossible for so many professionals in this industry, despite their genuine care, despite their real capability. The answer is conditions. Not character. Not training. Conditions.

The Insight

There is one principle the entire SEVA OS framework is built on: we feel before we think.

Before any conscious assessment has been made, the nervous system has already read the room. Something is transmitted — and something is received. Your guests cannot articulate what they are sensing. They are sensing it nonetheless.

The industry has trained people in what to do. It has not trained them in what to transmit. SEVA OS — State, Environment, Values, Actions — is the framework for designing the conditions in which genuine presence becomes the default, not the exception.

Forbes Travel Guide states that excellence is measured by how guests feel. EHL has built an entire curriculum around Affective Hospitality. Cornell describes its executive programme as a transformational learning experience built around emotional intelligence. Three institutions. Three roles. One direction. The architecture has been missing. SEVA OS is the architecture.

Until next time

Reply and tell me: what is the gap you sense in your operation right now? Not the training gap. The conditions gap. I read every reply.
